The Interview

I am sure you will agree, when it comes to being a candidate at an interview, you go with the best intentions of being treated with honesty and integrity. When most people consider interviews they are as honest as they can be when it comes to answering questions, but what if you get to an interview, and you know you’ve been lied to, and you know your interviewer is lying now. Well, this is something that I have come across repeatedly. Classic examples of this include, yearly pay reviews, training, time off, limited overtime. The list goes on, but you are desperate for work, should you accept the offer of work when you know you str being lied to from the very get-go?

There are two ways of looking at this in my opinion. Firstly yes sell your soul after all its work, and when you bring up the lie again, it will be brushed over. Usually, the person who said it will say oh I’d forgotten about that, or worse compound it with another lie, saying something along the lines of ‘I never said that’

OR

You can say, No this person who is a representative of the company its ideologies and structure, is blatantly lying to me I want no part in this, I would rather keep going and find other interviews, and if they are lying about this what else is going on in the company?

There is of course a third option, but you will be lucky to get that if you know they are blatantly lying to your face, you can ask for the whole thing in writing. At which point be aware there is a good chance they will ask if you how quickly you can start. This is a clear indicator that they have a high staff turnover, and are definitely not paying anyone what they are worth.

The big question you should be asking yourself is “Do you have any self-respect, is any job really worth this?”

Another thing that really gets me, is when someone says “Your qualifications are not a match for what we are looking for” What that means is they have no understanding of how education works, you are taught how to answer questions, write thesis’s and study independently. Therefore a candidate with a P.HD in English is just as capable of knowing how to do an IT job and capable of learning. We could also theorize that someone with a Doctorate would be far superior to a candidate with a B.Sc. However because most HR people do not go off and talk to their Department heads, or in many cases even involve them in candidate selection and review of Resumes’s how can they expect to learn.
