The difference between UK and US universities Grades!

Oxford, the Center of World Exelence!

What is the difference between UK and US universities, well apart from that in the USA people spend longer in University than in the UK for a similar education? Are grades comparable? and do HR people in the USA understand the UK system?

Here is some comparable data. Co-incidentally you can achieve any qualification quicker (I did)

UK

  • Bachelors: 3-4 years
  • Masters: 1 year
  • PhD: 3-4 years+

USA

  • Bachelors: 4 years
  • Masters: 2 years
  • PhD: 5-7 years+

Grades:

UK

  • First-class honours – typically 70% or higher
  • Second-class honours, upper division – typically 60 – 69%
  • Second-class honours, lower division – typically 50 – 59%
  • Third-class honours – typically 40 – 49%
  • Without honours – awarded an ordinary degree, sometimes known as a “pass”

USA

LetterGradePercentageGPA
A+97–100 %4.33 or 4.00
A93–96 %4.00
A−90–92 %3.67
B+87–89 %3.33
B83–86 %3.00
B−80–82 %2.67
C+77–79 %2.33
C73–76 %2.00
C−70–72 %1.67
D+67–69 %1.33
D63–66 %1.00
D−60–62 %0.67
F0–59 %0.00

So looking at both a Valatorian in the USA is the equivalent of a 1.1 in the UK!
